Description

The illustrations in this novel are vibrant and real. We get to walk with these women through their lives as the face challenges, that make them stronger empowered women. It's also refreshing to see a group of female friends that don't fall out with eachother, or there's some other interpersonal drama, as tends to be the leading form in these kind of stories. These are just great friends who love and support eachother. Honestly I didn't know what to expect when reading this story, but it did pleasantly surprise me! We get four short stories of these four best friends, and we see them going about their daily lives in New York. I felt as thought the characters truly were easily to love which made it very easy for me to read. I also thought that the art style was so beautiful!

It is structured as 4 short, interconnected stories. I liked them all, but my favorite was Group Chat, both because it was funny and because I liked some of the interesting visual techniques.

Love in Vain – French Creators Mezzo and Dupont Paint a Powerful and Moving Tribute to Blues Legend Robert Johnson From the creator of Yes, I'm Hot In This, this cheeky, hilarious, and honest graphic novel asks the question everyone has to figure out for themselves: Who are you? The best graphic novels have illustrations as strong as their text and Wash Day Diaries is no exception. The depictions of hair care rituals were particularly hypnotic and drew a clear line from the meditative quality of self care rituals to the meditative nature of the illustrations. I loved how each character had their own color palette that followed them through all the chapters. With a clear visual vocabulary for each character set, there was an engaging interplay between and within panels by keeping to that character-based color palette. Basically, yay so pretty! Thanks to Netgalley and Chronicle Books for this free e-ARC. The following is my voluntary and unbiased review. Davene’s story is also very emotional for me. For people who have not experienced depression, it may not be what you assume it looks like. It doesn’t mean your friend or the person who’s depressed is sad 24/7. We have ups and downs. I have depression and anxiety. You get used to putting on a face because you don’t want people to know or you don’t want to talk about it. And I wanted to show that part of how depression is, but also the other side of somebody who wants to help their friend and realizing maybe you aren’t helping in the way that they really need… I wanted to show Davene using medication and Cookie being against it because that’s reality for a lot of people.

The Lost Loiners – Anna Readman Lends an Unlikely Humanity to the Monstrous in Her Troll Illustration ZineThis was such a wonderful graphic novel. There are five sections and each section follows a different character in the friend group. Each character was so well constructed and felt real. I also loved the relationships in this friend group. This is a slice of life book that is so beautifully drawn and written. This graphic novel was so cute! I love seeing so many parts of the story being told through texting the tea in the group chat, and I love seeing a tight-knit friend group that would do anything to help and protect each other. The art is fantastic, and the depiction of the importance of their hair is really well done, showing different styles, but also how it connects them to each other.

The New York Public Library: Best Books of 2022 | The New York Public Library". www.nypl.org . Retrieved 2023-03-10. Robyn, you have a very specific style that shines through in Wash Day Diaries and Nubia: A Real One. How did you craft your signature approach? This is the story we all needed and experiences in our every day life. This was simply a delight to experience!

It should have been longer and no it should not be a 35 chapters book but a graphic novel series for sure. I wouldn't have minded seeing a little more support in certain avenues, specifically when one character is very obviously struggling with severe depression and confides in another character, only to have her experiences totally erased with "you look fine!" and "you don't need medications!" The treatment of that character in general felt clunky to me, but I enjoyed the rest of the book overall. The art was cute and I enjoyed it for the chill, slice-of-life read that it was.
