Description

The two main antagonists of the Samurai Sword arc being intimidated by Makima's horrifying abilities. At the same time, however, Makima's goal of building a better world for all of humanity is still genuine because of the fact that she wants to build a world where she is equal with others and at the very least, wants to experience a familial bond towards other people due to her rather harsh upbringing from the Japanese government itself who never teach her love and compassion in the first place and molds her into a monster that she is today. Although her goal is well-intentioned, in the end, she was feared by humanity itself ever since the earliest history of mankind due to her concept devil embodying the loss of free will. During Chapter 87, It is possible however, that Makima herself is heavily implied to be one of the members of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse that holds the moniker of Conquest as she was also involved in the battle with Chainsaw Man before he went missing which resulted on her attempting to find her whereabouts. There are several foreshadowing moments especially the sketchy attitude she had committed that shows that Makima isn't what she seems to be: In the same interview with Fujimoto, he states that the "ki" part of Makima's name means tree and as chainsaws were used to cut trees, one can cut the "Ki" part of her name and it will become "Mama" as a result. This makes sense in context as Denji is portrayed as a child who tries to search for a maternal figure that is absent from his life and Makima is the person who manages to give him a maternal relationship due to her motherly nature despite it being revealed to be a ruse in the end.

She has been shown to inflict damage by projecting an invisible force to targets she points at with her index finger [10] which is strong enough to heavily damage Darkness Devil, who is a Primal Devil, kill Power instantly [11] and send an empowered Chainsaw Man high into the atmosphere when she used it repetitively against him. She usually says " Bang! (バン!)" while using this ability.

Lucifer falling from John Milton's Paradise Lost, which was shown on Makima's wall during Chapter 81.

Makima's defeat and Chainsaw Man as a whole feels similar to Harlan Ellison's story and its film adaptation of the same name, "A Boy and His Dog" which tells the story of Vic and his telepathic dog, Blood, as they travel through the wastelands of post nuclear war America. Vic is a person who has no parents, AN education or morality as the only thing that Vic care for are food and sex, trying to avoid mutants and fiends in the pursuit of these goals, reflecting Denji and Pochita's relationship really well. In the movie, Vic also encounters with a girl named Quilla June Holmes, revealed to be a manipulative, scheming femme fatale who wants to gain ultimate power, reflecting Makima's personality as well. Towards the end of the movie, Quilla and Vic discover Blood starved near to death, with Quilla pleading Vic to abandon Blood as she seemingly proclaims her love towards him. This results in Vic deciding to pledge his loyalty towards Blood as he kills her offscreen as Vic feeds the meat of Quilla to Blood, reflecting the scene where after Denji defeats Makima whom she views as nothing but a dog and an obstacle for her obsession with Pochita, he decides to eat her as a delicious steak. Yoshida: Even the top-tier can't win against old age. Makima and Santa are both working towards some goal that we don't know. Well, as long as I get paid, I'm fine either way though.

Personality

Kishibe: You sure are thinking plenty of virtuous thoughts. But have you thought about what would happen if you lose and get eaten? It is implied that Makima herself is a member of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse as stated by this fact:

Makima revealing her true nature and attempting to gaslight Denji about the horrible things he had done during the past. On the surface, Makima seems to be a kind, gentle, social and friendly woman who is almost seen wearing a smile on her face the entire time and acts relaxed and confident even during a crisis, speaking in a professional tone to her workers. As her natural appearance is nearly identical to that of a human, she avoids disclosing her Devil nature to most of her underlings and spends much of the series posing as a human contracted to a Devil rather than a Devil herself. However, this is only a façade that she uses to fulfill her ultimate goal: After the death of Aki Hayakawa, Makima begins to reveal her true colors to Denji. Makima's true face is of someone that is Machiavellian and calculating, who sees people around her as nothing more than "dogs" she can use as much as she likes and must obey her without any hesitation. It was also revealed that Kishibe also had a plan to kill Makima for the greater good by asking his former partner, Quanxi, to join his cause while knowing that Makima is listening to every conversation that he had. When Makima ruthlessly murders Quanxi and two of her girlfriends, Kishibe prefers not to open his blindfold to prevent himself from witnessing the horror Makima has inflicted towards them. Despite this, Kishibe also prefers to not interfere with Makima's business so long as she is on the humanity's side even if she commits several inhuman things that she will do to other people or animals. Immense Strength: Makima possesses a great deal of physical strength allowing her to fight effectively in hand-to-hand combat without relying on any of her subordinates. Her strength was great enough to overwhelm Pochita's weakened form and shatter his chainsaws with her strikes. During Chapter 61, as Kishibe and Quanxi were having a nice chat together, Kishibe then tells Quanxi that "Makima is Listening". This alludes to the quote from the George Orwell novel 1984: "Big Brother is Watching You!". Big Brother himself is the main antagonist of said novel and is described as a powerful figure from Oceania who constantly surveyed his population so that he could easily control them into submission and if people decided to rebel, a very harsh punishment will surely be inflicted towards them. Big Brother's traits literally fit Makima's true nature as she is revealed to be the Control Devil representing the humanity's fear of being controlled by other governments as Makima would bring the worst kind of peace in the end, an almost-Orwellian dystopia.Fujimoto has mentioned FLCL as a source of inspiration for the girls of Chainsaw Man, and Makima is likely based on Haruko from FLCL who is a manipulative, unpredictable being. A Boy and His Dog movie poster, one of the possible inspirations for Chainsaw Man due to the similar nature of the story.

In truth, all of the inhuman and ruthless things she had done over the course of the manga are the foreshadowing to revealed that she is something worse: It was revealed that she is actually The Control Devil who exists a long time ago and was feared across the globe by humans and devils alike with the intention of bringing the worst kind of peace into the world. Her true personality were revealed to be that of a compulsive liar and manipulative sociopath who willingly use other people and devils as mere chess pawns to further her own goal while in addition, revealing herself to be a huge sadist as it was revealed that Makima had groomed him to have a happy life at first before crushing it all to pieces as she gaslights him for all the seemingly terrible things she had done so that she could sever the pact between Denji and Pochita. However, at the same time, Makima's calm and collected demeanor led to her absolute apathy on winning and losing the battle as in the end, Makima also perceives some of her losses as an absolute win in the end especially when it comes to fighting the Chainsaw Man which she obsessed at. This was shown where she dismissed Kishibe warnings about if she lost the battle against the Chainsaw Man and will be eaten by him in which she still considered it as an absolute win because she intends to become part of the Chainsaw Man itself and still tries to harness his powers. Her calm and collected behavior was also shown during the battle in Chapter 87, seemingly apathetic if she doesn't win the battle against Chainsaw Man or not despite using hybrid devils on her own disposal to defeat Chainsaw Man, knowing full well that she will lose the battle. Makima also possesses a huge sadomasochistic tendencies during the fight against Chainsaw Man as during Chapter 88, she is seemingly possessing a rather elated face as Chainsaw Man tied her and the brainwashed hybrids before cutting them off, indicating that she had a lot of fun during her battle against Chainsaw Man. Makima: This isn't money. It contains something from everyone here's... Fathers or mothers. Grannies or gramps. Brothers or sisters. Lovers or wives. Those people's eyes. Even if Princi was under Makima’s control or not, she was said to be a nicer Devil who was said to genuinely be loyal and protective over Chainsaw Man. From what is seen, Princi seems to have thought Makima was nicer than she really was and was basically duped and betrayed by Makima. Which if Princi was truly loyal to Makima and liked and cared for her in some way, this makes it even more tragic and cruel that Makima decided to push one of the only people who was truly loyal to her aside. Fans can now sleep easy, knowing that they can play as Makima without her coat in the shooter RPG gacha. What is Nikke?

Powers and Abilities

Makima's final battle at the end with Chainsaw Man was inspired by the Shinobu vs. Koyomi fight in the Kizumonogatari III movie according to a tweet by Fujimoto. Makima stating how many times she has been killed and her disappointment that Chainsaw Man didn't eat her. On her way out, she informs Aki that the operation to kill the Gun Devil will commence next year a Denji's wishes to eat a huge steak in Chapter 93 and this parallels Chapter 96 where Denji eats Makima with ginger-fried meat and onions. During Chapter 83, Kishibe then ends up deciding to kill Makima for the greater good and then executes his plans by summoning the Hell Devil to no avail as she used Denji to defeat it. Even if Makima reveals her goal towards Kishibe that her goal is to make the world a better place for humanity by eradicating all of the devils (including herself if she lost), Kishibe still acts suspicious towards Makima, claiming that she tried to use the Chainsaw Man's powers to distort the world even further.
