Can you paint the picture of Joey that is described in the ‘Author’s Note’ at the start of the book? The author clearly spent a lot of time researching this book. However, the author had a hard time letting go some of her research, and the pacing seemed off. The paragraphs were too long, impacting the storytelling, and I wanted to ask the author to read an Andy Weir novel to get a better feel for how to move the plot forward. Read the descriptions of the farm and other settings in the story. Could you draw / paint a picture of some of these places? Although this novel is entitled “Horse” and is ostensibly about a magnificent historical horse and the prestigious horse races of the antebellum South. It is also about “race” itself. “Race” when used to define us simply by the pigmentation of our skin can be such a horrible word. Zoey is a sweet older farm horse who takes Joey under her wing and helps him to learn the skills necessary for success as a farm horse. She is placid, obedient, and very much trusted. The end of the war arrives suddenly; when the men are about to leave for home, Albert asks Major Martin about the fate of the horses. He learns that they will be auctioned off, likely to local butchers who will slaughter them for meat. Major Martin gives the men every penny of his salary to try to win Joey at auction. They are outbid by the butcher, but at the last minute another bid is received and Joey is sold to Emilie's grandfather. Emilie died after the horses left the farm, and the old man wants to keep Joey in her memory. When he hears Albert's story, the grandfather sells Joey to Albert for one penny, as long as Albert promises to keep Emilie's memory alive. Albert does so. With all the history and research that Brooks brought to this book… I thought it was her most intimate of all the books she has written. It’s my new Brooks favorite. The author clearly has an affinity for horses, which made the relationship between Jarret and Lexington all the more poignant. I felt the intense love between human and horse, and appreciated the subtle way Brooks connected revelations about the horse from the past with its legacy and bones in the present. I loved learning about the field of osteology and art history – and even the national fascination with horse racing. Antonio gives his grandson an account of the hardships of the Spanish Civil War. Readers will empathise with Antonio, while acquiring an understanding of an important European conflict.

At the end of Chapter 1, Joey says that there is an ‘instinctive and immediate bond of trust and affection’ between him and Albert. What does this mean? How do we show people that we trust them? I’ve never been a horse-or pony girl….but I’m at least a part-time Geraldine Brooks girl. “People of the Book”, was one of my favorites. It’s gratifying to break my hiatus with such a well-written book. These are some passages and my thoughts.I love the use of words and language. I looked up 66 new words while reading Horse. Some of those words included: semaphores, deshabillement, ziggurat, macerating, plinths, zygomatic, pannier, ferruled, addlepated, turves, obduracy, riven, rowel, doggerel, jussive, subfusc, and many others. Personally, I enjoyed the portions from the Civil War era better than the more preachy modern-day sections. The modern-day sections might just be too recent. We all just lived through these events; they are fresh in our mind. Perhaps this book will age well. Overtime, her bedroom became a mini natural history Museum, filled with skeletons of lizards, mice, birds, displayed on plinth fashioned from salvaged wire spools or cotton reels.
