Description

I read this book ravenously- staying up late to read just one more chapter and sneaking pages in at work to devour its content. It might be tempting to think that your mind is locked behind some protective wall, safe from the influence of the media onslaught, but that's not how brains work.

Jestem wdzięczna, że mogłam ją poznać, a przez to dowiedzieć się o perspektywie różnych osób z różną przeszłością na ten sam temat. They don’t want to be Barbie dolls but, like generations of women before them, are told they must look like them. I love the idea, the message and the stories of interviewees but the writing style of this book is not my favorite. I was fascinated and saddened by an account of one woman who found her street harassment was reduced considerably after she shaved her head, stopped wearing makeup, and started wearing baggy clothing. They don’t want to be Barbie dolls but, like generations of women before them, are told they must look like them. Może nie ma ona w sobie nic odkrywczego i opisuje naszą rzeczywistość, ale właśnie przez to możemy się z nią zidentyfikować. Sad because she already believed that a woman’s beauty could be captured via a series of measurements. Engeln’s book is thought provoking and will be fascinating for all readers, especially those interested in psychology, cultural studies, media, or gender studies. I was too young to wonder why a woman would be hired just to walk around and look pretty, or why there was no male equivalent of the roaming southern belles.Let’s be real here, even celebrities don’t actually look the way they appear to on their Instagram feeds.

There seemed to be another, darker, inescapable layer that Renee skims the surface of, and I think the book would have benefited from presenting the intersectionality of Beauty Sickness and privilege. If it at least acknowledges it and attempted to offer some solutions (or even other resources) for how to have a better image of your body when it ISN'T capable of a lot of things, that would have been much better. If you can’t sit comfortably in an outfit, that’s a guarantee that it will steal valuable brain space from you when you wear it. If you’ve ever decided not to go swimming with your children because you couldn’t imagine facing the world in a bathing suit, that’s beauty sickness.
