About this deal

That history is all very interesting, but it doesn’t tell you exactly what Ilford HP5 Plus is today and what you can expect from it. There's also print and apparel over at Society 6, currently showcasing over two dozen t-shirt designs and over a dozen unique photographs available for purchase. Ilford HP, or Hypersensitive Panchromatic, transitioned to the current HP5 Plus 400 in 1989 and remained unchanged. Ilford HP5 Plus is rated to shoot between ISO 200 and 3200, but it will show the best results between ISO 320 and 1600. You’ll have to adjust your camera manually and let us know what ISO you shot it at before we process the roll.

Another new thing to point out is this film’s exposure latitude, as well as its aforementioned dynamic range. The film can also be reversal developed to produce slides by following a typical two-bath plus second exposure system and it’s my understanding that ILFORD are in the process of updating their documentation at the time of writing.HP5 has a great exposure latitude, making it flexible enough to deliver stunning photos in a variety of lighting and contrast conditions. Learn more about the differences between film developers, and how to choose the right one for you in this article. It wasn't just the name and packaging that changed over time, the film had a different ISO in earlier versions too, finally settling at ISO 400 in 1989.

I also had to figure out times – some guesswork and more back of the envelope maths required, but I settled on a 27-minute development, around 30% more time than I used for 6400ASA.This only lasted for two years until being superseded by the imaginatively titled HP3 in 1941, which was rated at different speeds depending on when in its life cycle you bought it. It’s the lens that makes the only difference – these could be shot with a 1960’s Summicron with low contrast or the latest ASPH with far more contrast. I inverted the tank for the first 30 seconds, then for my usual 5 times every 30 seconds for the first 5 minutes, 5 times every minute for the next 5 minutes, twice every minute for the next five, and then once a minute until the end of development.

Surely I’ve still so much to learn, but I simply can’t understand how, why and when TriX should be considered better than HP5+. Tri-X and HP5+ are often compared because of their similar age (80+ years on the market), box speed (ISO 400), and application (made for press photographers). And so in all formats and with most developers, you can expect lots of detail, even with softer lenses . Let’s not beat about the bush here, it’s cheaper than Kodak Tri-X 400 in most territories I’m aware of. However, if you push- or pull-process your HP5+, it’ll likely become more sensitive to over- and under-exposures and require finer metering for best results. Both developers, especially the Rodinal in a semi-stand will increase edge sharpness, giving the feeling of greater contrast without necessarily building up too much contrast across the entire frame. In summary, if you are looking for gritty and a grainy look that’s affordable then we would recommend Ilford HP5+ 400 film. HP5 even has a recipe in HC-110 that’ll push it as high as ISO 12,800 — but pushing this far can result in unsharp, overly grainy negatives that lack tonal range. Ilford HP5 is a medium-speed black and white film with a rich grain structure and an incredible tonal range.

The good news is there’s no film out there that can’t be pushed, but how far can you really push an ISO 400 film before it just looks bad?

However, PLUS films, which use an established emulsion technology, have more exposure latitude than DELTA films. And for good reason – it has medium contrast, a wide exposure latitude, and is perfectly suited for action or documentary style photography.
