Even after 1300+ pages there is still no sign of an overarching shape to this story, which perhaps makes Saga an appropriate name. Animated faeces, an unexpected connection and we get some torturous flashback as ‘The Will’ goes through the wringer. This will make you laugh and squirm; it’ll warm your heart and it will break your heart… And usually all within a single volume. Eric Stephenson warned Vaughan and Staples that some retailers and distributors would object to this cover image, thus limiting the series' audience, but after seeing Staples' rendition of the image, Stephenson decided that sales would not be a problem. This flashback device means that we know Hazel lives to see the end of the story, but everyone else is at risk.

Vaughan and Staples pretty much tick all the boxes; Staples magnificent artwork and Vaughan’s dialogue work beautifully in tandem; each one equally as essential to the success of the other. It has also been noted for its diverse portrayal of ethnicity, sexuality and gender social roles, and for its treatment of war. It's also worth noting that Saga went on extended hiatus after issue 54 was released in mid-2018 and isn't due back until some time in 2020. Over the course of these 54 issues the story twists and turns unexpectedly, all narrated with aplomb by the now grown-up Hazel.
