About this deal

Emmett builds the tension well, and Bernatene’s digital mixed media illustrations are, at turns, over-the-top comical, as they should be, but then strangely beautiful in spots. And, by all means, start with this one, for it has humor and good messages to extend to every viewer. Happily though, at the heart of the story there really is a Christmas spirit about what the real meaning of Christmas should be. Jonathan Emmett's words are funny and well paced, but for me the real strong point of the book is the illustrations.

He went into a rage and his parents tried to pacify him by telling him they had bought all of the gifts on his list. If this book had language geared towards older kids who no longer think about the man in the red suit, then the dark humor and the lack of a positive resolution or lesson learned would just be funny. He worked on it for a year, until by Christmas Eve his parents had moved out of the house because it was so dangerous. Crestfallen at the thought that Santa is just a myth, young daughter Judy sets an elaborate trap and successfully snares Santa Claus.

But it feels like a story for a parent to share with a child, and I do not enjoy stories about kids who do bad things and never learn.

This book is a fantastic picture story, although some younger (more delicate and fragile) children may find the concept of blowing up Father Christmas and/or feeding him to ravenous tigers a little too upsetting. Judy won't hear of it and makes a "trap" (string and contraptions) to catch Santa when he arrives at their house, which he does! The other inspiration for the book was an illustration by Ronald Searle for one of the Molesworth books written by Geoffrey Willans. The illustrations were done digitally, adding to the modern feel, but they are also made warmer by brushstrokes showing on the images.Bill (Robert Hays) and Molly (Shelley Long) Emerson have moved their family from the northeast to the desert southwest. Never mind the fact that his parents get him everything he wishes for since they are terrified of him. Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. She won't hear of it and makes a "trap" (strings and contraptions) to catch Santa when he arrives at their house, which he does! Michael has produced several regional shows, at Grand Opera House he produced Richard Dormer’s award winning production of Hurricane directed by Rachel O’Riordan and A Night in November by Marie Jones at Belfast Grand Opera House and Ireland tour.
