However, as with all u-locks, the portability won’t be as slick as you’ll get with the Foldylock Forever. For example the Kryptonite New York Standard and the Kryptolok New-U are both rated Gold, but the New York bike lock is clearly massively more secure. Now I just need to determine if I should do the ABUS 6500 or Abus Chain 1010 as my second lock to compliment my Abus Mini 54. Your rear wheel is usually the second most expensive component on your bike, so this takes priority over the front wheel.

But the plates are also a bit stiff, so unfolding the lock and getting it around your bike is a bit more difficult. However, Sold Secure test far more locks than ART, and for this reason I prefer to use them as my benchmark. And because their construction is more complex, they’re less likely to function as well after they’ve repelled a vigorous attack. Seeing as it’s so secure, I was interested to find out why the Skunklock hadn’t been put forward for Sold Secure testing. It’s suitable for commuters and cyclists who are constantly on the move, and will lock your bike safely to most objects.

It’s just that in terms of the protection it offers, it sits somewhere in between mid and high security. Each 5mm hardened steel plate the Foldylock uses is capable of resisting an enhanced toolkit and can repel more determined attacks. However, while the extra 1 mm will also provide extra resistance against hacksaws and other manual cutting tools, it won’t make any difference against an angle grinder. Just like the FS 500, the Forever received the Sold Secure Gold rating, sitting it alongside some of the best locks on the market.

which is relatively heavy for a bike lock but is only marginally heavier than the ABUS Bordo 6500, which comes in at 3. The best Abus folding lock on our list is sold secure gold level: meaning anyone would have a tougher time breaking the lock. After all, many of us rely on our bikes for transport and exercise, so we must ensure they are protected. For example you'll never be able to lock your bike to a bulky lamppost (or any other large street furniture) with a u-lock. That being said, my Huldit Bike Lock Mount allows me to attach the Extreme 59 to the frame of my bike, so it can easily be transported when cycling. This means that once the arms inserted, it’s anchored there and you don’t have to worry about holding it in there while you turn the key to lock up. On cheaper, lower security folding locks, it’s possible to work bolt cutter jaws between the plates and to cut through the bolts. All three locks come with decent frame mounts that will screw into the water bottle cradle holes on your bike or fasten around your frame with Velcro or plastic ties.

At least it will be if you can fasten the mount into the place where your water bottle cradle would usually go. If you ride a more expensive bike, the Sold Secure Silver rating the Foldylock Compact offers might not quite cut it. You can also view my recent video review of the Foldylock Mini on the BikeLockWiki YouTube channel here. Interestingly, there is also the added service of the Kryptonite Key Safe Program whereby they send you two spare keys in case you mislay yours: a great service well worth having. When locking my bike in a busy public area, I remove my front wheel and use the X-Plus 6500 to secure both of my wheels and frame at the same time.Along with the bigger locking space, these qualities make using the Trelock FS 500 Toro much more pleasant to use than the Abus Bordo 6500. Instead, the system relies on the tight fit of the cradle around the lock to keep everything in place. Abus produce a huge variety of folding locks, but at the moment they've only got one lock that's got an acceptable security rating.

At the core of the shackle, there’s an 11mm hollow area which is filled with a pressurised vomit-inducing compound. That’s because although the Trelock is a Gold rated folding lock, it actually sits at the lowest end of that rating. As always, it would greatly increase the security of your bike if you knew how to lock your bike properly.

After using the Compact for four years, I can tell you it’s impressively durable and uses corrosion-resistant metal, which has demanded minimal maintenance. Whilst it’s the cheapest lock featured in this review, it’s not made with the highest quality materials.
