This is a quieter story in the series, and not a lot happens, but it's always a pleasure being in this fascinating world. "Home: Habitat" is notable for being narrated by Mensah, and I liked being inside her head and seeing how she views Murderbot. They have such a unique relationship and respect for each other. SecUnit is looking down at her. “You can hug me if you need to.” Publishers Weekly wrote that Wells "gives depth to a rousing but basically familiar action plot by turning it into the vehicle by which SecUnit engages with its own rigorously denied humanity". [17] The Verge likewise felt All Systems Red to be a "pretty basic story", but nonetheless "fun", and lauded Wells's worldbuilding. [18] James Nicoll observed that the plot relies on "opportunistic corporate malevolence", and noted that only Murderbot's personality prevented the setting from being "unrelentingly grim". Non-Human Non-Binary: In addition to having No Biological Sex, all SecUnits depicted so far have been agender. I've gifted copies of the first volume to five different people so far, and the only reason I haven't given it to more is because I'm just not that sociable as to be regularly exchanging gifts with all that many folks.)

And what an awkward transition it was into the new story -- the beginning of System Collapse is one of the clunkiest starts to a sequel I've ever experienced with just way too many human names bandied about for characters that are basically indistinguishable. But thankfully it didn't take overly long before we set off on a new mission that got me settled in more comfortably and feeling like I was reading something closer to a Murderbot plot from the earlier books. I still enjoy the way Wells writes Murderbot's POV, with lots of sardonic inner monologue and copious use of parentheticals, which is a fantastic touch that so few writers do. Initial post: A copy of the ARC of this book landed on my doorstep today!! I literally gasped in delight. What a fantastic surprise! Thank you Tor!! Spry, Jeff (June 22, 2021). "Exclusive Q&A: Sci-fi author Martha Wells talks about her latest Murderbot novella, Fugitive Telemetry". Space.com . Retrieved July 9, 2022. The Murderbot series is a heart-pounding thriller that never lets up, but it's also one of the most humane portraits of a nonhuman I've ever read. Come for the gunfights on other planets, but stay for the finely drawn portrait of a deadly robot whose smartass goodness will give you hope for the future of humanity." —Annalee Newitz, author of AutonomousMurderbot — both the character and the series — has grown on me immensely with each book in the series. Murderbot may be a cyborg, but it’s one of the most human and appealing characters I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Become a Real Boy: Defied. Dr. Mensah tells Murderbot that most humans would assume that since it looks human it would want to be human. Murderbot says this is the dumbest thing it’s ever heard.

And she tells herself: you’re being very foolish. Because you were a hostage for a period of days, and it was a minor inconvenience compared to what Murderbot— No, SecUnit; she’s never been given permission to use that private name. What SecUnit went through. Blatant Lies: It constantly tells itself that it doesn't care about its stupid clients and is utterly indifferent to how it's treated.
