They came completely disassembled so had to put the whole thing together and fill and bleed the cables. We received a sample set towards the end of 2015 and have been riding them through the goop of a (very) wet British winter. Main reason I’m looking is because I still like my cross-top levers, so until hope launch their hydro ones there aren’t many options. Braking power is excellent even with coiled housing, not a big difference in modulation even - I recently moved the Juins between bikes. Sticky pistons is the only fault I’ve read about, and if it can be fixed with a clean, then that’s all good.

But once they've bedded in, they'll allow you to brake later and more confidently, and that's definitely worth paying for. Unfortunately I’m in no position to answer if they are better than Trp Hy/Rd stopping wise and I’m fairly sure a full hydro system would be much much better but overall I’m happy with them. Our Colorado-based team previously found that TRP's similar HY/RD model didn't suffer any noticeable brake fade on long descents of Boulder's Flagstaff mountain, and indications are good that the Juin Tech R1 brakes handle themselves similarly. The Juin tech F1 Flat Mount hydraulic cable pull road disc brake set offers a unique solution to the rider wanting to upgrade from mechanical cable pull disc brakes. When working well they are ok but they seem to need regular adjustment and loose bite quite regularly. Tracked Airmail services allow you to keep tabs on your package as it makes it's way across the world to you. One thing to note: when the GT's heat up, the pistons are a little slow to retract until they cool off a bit - just like my Shimano hydros. This allows the rider to use their normal sti/ergo or flat bar levers on a disc brake bike without the expense of upgrading everything to a full hydraulic system. Ok, not as good as a fully sealed hydraulic system, but I find them more robust than mechanical discs in wet and mud as I find mechanical systems fill their guys with crap and stop working effeectively. I am okay with the performance on gravel but any sort of technical cross style riding gets very difficult quickly.

The brake calipers mount to the frame and forks using the provided bolts, pads are pre-fitted and the calipers connected to shifters using regular brake cables. The F1 is the latest addition to the Juin Tech stable, sold as a set including mounting bolts, adaptors and rotors.Still crave full hydraulics, but these are pretty much the best setup I’ve found if you need/want to retain cable actuation.

So saying – I’ll be treating the Tripster over the next few months with an upgrade to shimano full hydraulic / 11 speed, which I’m looking forward to. This enables you to convert your bike to a hydraulic disc brake using the normal STI / Ergo levers (short pull levers). Power and modulation are definitely better than conventional cable-actuated disc brakes, but it won't blow your socks off out of the box. It's important to use good quality compressionless housing, so that force applied at the lever is transmitted efficiently along the length of the cable to the caliper; I opted for Jagwire's Road Pro brake kit. Well the brakes didn't immediately feel much more powerful than the cable disc brakes (Hayes CX Expert) fitted previously, but after a week or two of riding the pads had bedded in nicely. The package includes a pair of brakes (pads included), 2 flat mount adapters, 2 160 mm discs + screws. In the nice green box you get the two calipers, a pair of 160mm discs, pair of adapter mounts and the mounting bolts for everything.
